The briar’s carved finish gives the pipe a great in-hand feel that makes it easy to grip and hold.
Black Coal Apple Billiard is rusticated by hand with a wood chisel. Every gouge-cut has to be right. It takes time to learn the control necessary to do this, and a lot of actual hands-on experience.
EACH individual piece of briar determines the eventual shape of the pipe in the hands of J.M. Boswell. He doesn’t plan or draw out what he is making, he just reaches for a block of briarwood and starts cutting and shaping. His whole heart and soul is in crafting these pipes.
