Gently Smoked – PREBEN HOLM Hallmark H-2 (C5) Fancy Freehand Sitter Tobacco Pipe 

From J.M.’s private collection, he is parting ways with this rare Preben Holm Hallmark H-2 (C5) Fancy Freehand Sitter.

Renowned as a pioneer of the Danish Freehand Movement, Preben Holm (1947-1989) has made many marks in pipe making history. The Danish master carver started his pipe making career early in life, some of his earliest pipes being sold to the well know Pipe-Dan shop as early as his 16th birthday. in 1971 Holm partnered with Herman G. Lane of Lane Ltd., shortly there after rebranding Holm’s pipes under the English name “Ben Wade”. During the 1970’s these “Danish Ben Wade” freehand pipes became hugely popular in the United States, naming Preben Holm one of the most famous Pipe Carvers of the era. In 1985, the distribution shifted from Lane Ltd. to CAO. For warranty reasons, the pipes from this final production period were stamped with (C5). 

Coming from Preben Holm’s Hallmark Series, this H-2 Fancy Freehand Sitter has a very organic silhouette. 

Glossy reddish/walnut-hued finish with bold straight and birds-eye grain covering the angular bowl. 

Light charring can be seen along the crown of the bowl. 

Natural briar plateaux can be seen along the bottom of the bowl, allowing this Fancy Freehand to sit on full display. 

Original acrylic semi-translucent mouthpiece. Original “PH” inlay can be seen along the top of the mouthpiece. 

No chatter can be seen.
